Alabama’s public golf has a state institution behind it. The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail was set in motion by the Retirement Systems of Alabama, the state pension system, and today runs to 11 sites with more than 400 holes between them. Several of those sites are mapped in Yardage: Ross Bridge and the three Oxmoor Valley courses in Birmingham, Highland Oaks in Dothan, and Silver Lakes near Gadsden, whose nine-hole combinations are the reason Glencoe shows 7 mapped entries, the same number as Huntsville.

In all, 218 Alabama courses are mapped in Yardage: 185 eighteen-hole layouts and 33 nine-holers, a nine-hole share of 15.1% that ranks 42nd of the 50 states. Birmingham leads the cities with 20 mapped courses. Down on the coast, Gulf Shores has 8, the Gulf State Park Golf Course among them, and Mobile matches it with 8. The golf runs all year here; summer is the stretch residents plan around, with early tee times and an eye on the afternoon storms.

At 4.2 courses per 100,000 residents, Alabama sits 32nd in the Golf Course Census, a little under the national figure, which works out to one mapped course for every 23,822 people. The state holds 1.45% of our catalog, and 76 of its 112 postal cities have a single mapped course, which is the small-town Alabama most golfers here actually play.

If a Gulf weekend or a drive down I-65 puts you on a course you have never seen, our guide to playing a new golf course covers how to size up a layout on the first tee, and the national directory lists the other 49 states the same way, city by city.
