Winter is the golf season in Arizona. The desert courses fill from January through April, then empty out when the heat arrives, and the tee sheets shift to dawn and twilight through the summer. Fall brings overseeding: the City of Phoenix publishes an aerification and overseeding schedule for its eight municipal courses, and its rate card carries a September-to-October pre-overseed price.

Yardage has 346 Arizona courses mapped, 295 of them eighteen-hole and 51 nine-hole. Scottsdale’s 50 mapped courses are the most of any city in the state and one of the largest city totals in the whole catalog. Tucson follows with 38, and the five courses Tucson City Golf runs across four complexes are mapped, Randolph, Dell Urich, El Rio, Fred Enke and Silverbell. Phoenix shows 27, with Papago, Encanto and Cave Creek among the mapped municipals, and Mesa 25.

The high country runs the calendar the other way. Around Flagstaff, Prescott, Payson and the White Mountains the courses open in spring and take the summer trade while the valley bakes, then close when the snow comes. Per head, Arizona has 4.54 courses per 100,000 residents, 25th in the Golf Course Census and a shade above the national figure. The nine-hole share of 14.7% ranks 44th, one of the lowest in the country, and the state holds 2.31% of the catalog.

Snowbirds and spring-training visitors play a lot of unfamiliar golf here. Our guide to how to play a course you have never seen is written for that first look at a layout, and the national directory covers the other 49 states.
