The Connecticut State Golf Association was founded in 1899 and calls itself the country’s oldest state golf association; it administers handicaps at nearly 160 member clubs today. Yardage’s count of the state is a little larger, 176 courses mapped, partly because it counts courses rather than clubs and lists the nine-hole combinations at multi-course facilities separately.

New Britain’s 8 mapped entries, for instance, are all Stanley, the city’s 27-hole public course, listed as three nines and the eighteens they form. Avon and Greenwich also show 8 apiece, and Farmington 5, which puts a good share of the state’s mapped golf in the Farmington Valley west of Hartford. Hartford’s own Goodwin and Keney courses are mapped, and so is Goose Run at the Naval Submarine Base in Groton.

The split is 132 eighteen-hole courses and 44 nine-holers, a 25.0% nine-hole share that ranks 26th. Connecticut has 4.77 courses per 100,000 residents, 22nd in the Golf Course Census and above the national figure, one mapped course for every 20,957 people, and holds 1.17% of the catalog. Of 95 postal cities, 56 have a single course.

The season runs roughly April to November. Shoreline courses from Greenwich to Pawcatuck open first and close last; the Litchfield Hills wait for the frost to leave. Anyone playing a member-guest at an unfamiliar club can start with our guide to your first round at a new course; the full course directory covers the rest of the country.
