Golf courses in Florida

Naples has 56 courses mapped in Yardage, more than any other city in the United States, and that one number explains a lot about Florida golf: communities on the southwest coast built around eighteen holes, one after another, from Naples up through Fort Myers (25) and Sarasota (21).

Yardage has 1,036 Florida courses mapped, the largest state total in our catalog and 6.91% of it. The split leans hard to full-length golf: 896 eighteen-hole courses and 140 nine-holers, a 13.5% nine-hole share that ranks 47th of 50. Boca Raton and Orlando have 27 mapped courses each. The per-capita figure is more ordinary than the state’s reputation suggests, 4.42 courses per 100,000 residents, 29th in the Golf Course Census, one course for every 22,647 people; there are simply a lot of people.

Visit Florida calls golf a perk available every day of the year, and it is, with the footnote that the year has two halves. Winter is the season, when the snowbirds arrive and the tee sheets fill; summer is hot and punctuated by afternoon thunderstorms, so the smart tee times are early. Public golf includes the university courses at the University of Florida in Gainesville and the University of South Florida in Tampa, both mapped.
