Louisiana’s tourism office runs the Audubon Golf Trail, a set of courses spread across the state from Lake Charles to Delhi, and several of its stops are mapped in Yardage: Carter Plantation in Springfield, Cypress Bend in Many, Tamahka Trails in Marksville and Oak Knoll in Hammond.

Yardage has 122 Louisiana courses mapped, 85 eighteen-hole and 37 nine-hole, a 30.3% nine-hole share that ranks 14th. Baton Rouge and Shreveport lead with 8 mapped courses each; the capital’s include the LSU course, City Park and Webb Park, and Shreveport’s include Querbes Park and Huntington Park. New Orleans shows 5, Lake Charles and New Iberia 4 apiece, and the military courses at Barksdale Air Force Base in Bossier City and Warrior Hills at Fort Polk are mapped.

Per head, Louisiana is thin: 2.64 courses per 100,000 residents, 47th in the Golf Course Census, one course for every 37,854 people. Part of that is geography. Much of the coastal south is marsh and open water, and the golf follows the high ground along the Mississippi and the I-10 and I-20 corridors. Of 82 postal cities, 63 have a single mapped course, and the state holds 0.81% of the catalog. Golf here runs twelve months. Summer is hot and wet, with afternoon storms that clear as fast as they arrive; October through April is the comfortable half.

Anyone in town for a festival weekend can read our guide to playing a course you have never seen before a round; the national directory covers every state.
