Golf courses in Maine

Eighty-one of the 93 Maine towns in our catalog have a single golf course, and no town has more than 3. That is the story of golf here: 109 courses mapped in Yardage, 67 eighteen-hole and 42 nine-hole, spread thin from York to Fort Kent, which has a mapped nine of its own.

Auburn, Bangor, Falmouth and Scarborough each show 3 mapped courses; Brunswick 2. Bangor’s include the municipal eighteen and nine, listed separately, and Portland’s Riverside Municipal is mapped the same way. The 38.5% nine-hole share ranks seventh nationally, and per head Maine is rich in golf: 7.7 courses per 100,000 residents, ninth in the Golf Course Census, one course for every 12,980 people. The state holds 0.73% of the catalog.

The season is short. Sugarloaf’s course in the Carrabassett Valley, a Robert Trent Jones Jr. design beside the state’s second-highest peak, lists a May-to-October season, and that is roughly the window statewide; the coast opens a little earlier and the County closes a little sooner. Coastal courses like Samoset in Rockport and Shore Acres at Sebasco, lake courses like Point Sebago and Belgrade Lakes, and the mountain courses at Sugarloaf and Sunday River are all mapped.
