Eleven of the Maryland courses mapped in Yardage are on military ground, among them the three at Joint Base Andrews, the three at Fort Meade, the Naval Academy course in Annapolis and the nine at the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Indian Head. Add the University of Maryland course in College Park and Montgomery County Golf’s nine courses in the D.C. suburbs, Needwood, Little Bennett, Sligo Creek and Falls Road among them, and golf around Washington looks fuller than the state’s per-capita number suggests.

Yardage has 182 Maryland courses mapped, 158 eighteen-hole and 24 nine-hole, a 13.2% nine-hole share that ranks 48th. Baltimore and Rockville lead with 7 mapped courses each, and Bethesda has 5. Berlin’s 6 are the Ocean City golf belt, Eagles Landing, Rum Pointe, River Run and the Ocean City Golf and Yacht Club among them, and Easton’s 4 stand for the Eastern Shore.

At 2.9 courses per 100,000 residents Maryland is 46th in the Golf Course Census, one course for every 34,425 people; the state holds 1.21% of the catalog across 108 postal cities, 67 of them with a single course. The season runs roughly March to December, and most courses stay open through winter on any day above freezing; the Shore and the ocean resorts stay playable longest, and the ridges of Western Maryland around Rocky Gap see snow first.
