The Gulf Coast is where Mississippi’s golf concentrates. Thirteen mapped courses sit in the three coastal counties, from Bay Saint Louis and Diamondhead to Pascagoula, among them Fallen Oak and Grand Bear in Saucier, Shell Landing in Gautier and the two Diamondhead courses. Yardage has 113 Mississippi courses mapped, 91 eighteen-hole and 22 nine-hole, a 19.5% nine-hole share that ranks 38th.

Jackson leads the cities with 9 mapped courses; Hattiesburg and Olive Branch, the DeSoto County suburb of Memphis, have 4 each, and Columbus and Laurel 3. The two university courses are mapped, Ole Miss in Oxford and Mississippi State in Starkville, and so are the two Dancing Rabbit courses in Philadelphia and the Pearl Municipal course outside Jackson.

Golf here is a twelve-month affair. Summer is long and wet, with heat that settles in by May and lingers past September; the cool months from October to April are the ones visitors plan around. Per head the state has 3.83 courses per 100,000 residents, 37th in the Golf Course Census and a little under the national figure, one course for every 26,143 people, and 0.75% of the catalog across 72 postal cities, 47 with a single course. Nearly half the mapped course names in Mississippi include the words Country Club, 47.8%.

Visitors to the coast can read our guide to playing a new golf course before the first tee; the national directory covers every state.
