The Continental Divide runs through western Montana, and it splits the state’s golf as neatly as it splits its rivers. West of it, courses sit in mountain valleys: the Flathead around Kalispell and Whitefish and the Clark Fork around Missoula. East of it come the Gallatin Valley around Bozeman and then the high plains, where Billings, the largest city, sits on the Yellowstone River with 7 mapped courses, more than any other Montana town. Bozeman, Kalispell and Missoula have 5 each.

Snow decides the calendar. Valley courses usually open in April and mountain courses closer to May, and most of the state is done by late October. Long June evenings make up some of the difference.

83 courses in Montana are mapped in Yardage, 50 of them eighteen-hole and 33 nine-hole. That nine-hole share, 39.8%, is the sixth-highest of any state in the Golf Course Census, and it fits a state where 39 of the 52 towns in the directory have a single course. Per resident, Montana lands 11th, with 7.25 courses per 100,000 people, or one for every 13,791 Montanans. Public golf here includes municipal and college courses: Bill Roberts Municipal in Helena and the University of Montana’s nine-hole course in Missoula are both mapped.

If you are driving through on the way to Glacier or Yellowstone, our guide to playing a course for the first time covers what to check before the opening tee shot. For the other 49 states, start at the national directory.
