Golf courses in Nebraska

In a Nebraska town the golf course is usually a municipal nine with the town’s name on the sign. Alma and Arapahoe on the Republican River and Ainsworth up on Highway 20 are all mapped that way, and 89 of the 109 Nebraska towns in the directory have a single course. Statewide the nines outnumber the eighteens, 97 to 90 among the 187 courses mapped in Yardage, a 51.9% nine-hole share that only three states exceed.

The eighteen-hole courses cluster where the people are. Omaha holds 27 mapped courses and Lincoln 15, with Elkhorn, Bellevue and Ashland filling in around the Omaha metro and the road to Lincoln. Out west, the grass-covered dunes of the Sandhills have drawn a different kind of course: Sand Hills Golf Club near Mullen and The Prairie Club at Valentine are both mapped, along with Wild Horse in Gothenburg.

Nebraska is fourth in the country for courses per resident, with 9.27 per 100,000 people and one course for every 10,791 Nebraskans, a figure you can compare state by state in the Golf Course Census. The Nebraska Golf Association, founded in 1966, counts about 160 member clubs. Courses open around April and close in October, and the wind blows through all of it.
