Las Vegas holds 40 of the courses mapped in Nevada, which puts it among the five cities with the most mapped courses anywhere in our catalog. Add Henderson’s 11 and Mesquite’s 7 and the southern tip of the state accounts for about half of everything listed below.

Southern Nevada is Mojave Desert golf: turf laid over sand and rock, water hazards that exist because someone decided they should, and a season that runs all year, with summer rounds starting at first light to beat the heat. Northern Nevada is different country. Reno, with 10 mapped courses, and Carson City, with 7, sit in high desert against the Sierra Nevada, where courses close or go dormant for winter and the season is closer to April through October.

Nevada’s catalog entry reads 114 courses: 96 eighteen-hole and 18 nine-hole, a 15.8% nine-hole share that is 41st among the states. The state’s golf is sized for visitors as much as residents, and the per-capita numbers show it: 3.47 courses per 100,000 people, 43rd nationally, or one mapped course for every 28,791 Nevadans. The Golf Course Census puts those figures next to every other state’s. Away from the big cities, golf is municipal and small: Boulder City’s municipal course and the nine-holers in Winnemucca and Wells are all mapped.

If you are in Las Vegas for three days and one of them is a golf day, our guide to playing a new golf course is written for that trip. Other states are in the national directory.
