No town in New Hampshire holds more than four of the courses mapped in Yardage. Amherst has 4, Keene 3, and Bethlehem, Bretton Woods and Concord 2 each; 58 of the 74 towns in the directory have just one. Golf here is spread out the way the state is, from the Seacoast’s short stretch of shoreline through the Merrimack Valley towns to the Lakes Region and the White Mountains.

The mountain courses carry the old resort tradition. Both courses at the Mount Washington Hotel in Bretton Woods are mapped, as are the two in Bethlehem, and they play in a short window: snow lingers into May at elevation, and by mid-October the season is closing behind the foliage traffic. Down in the southern tier, around Amherst, Nashua and Concord, courses open in April and hold on into November.

The count for New Hampshire is 93 mapped courses, 66 with eighteen holes and 27 with nine, a 29.0% nine-hole share. For a small state that is a lot of golf: 6.57 courses per 100,000 residents, 13th in the country, and one course for every 15,219 people. Nearly half the mapped courses, 46.2%, carry ‘Country Club’ in the name, and a name is not a policy; call before you assume a course is private.

The Golf Course Census has the same per-capita figure for all 50 states. If a weekend in the mountains puts you on a course you have never seen, our guide to playing a new course covers how to handle the first tee. The national directory lists the rest of the country.
