Albuquerque sits about a mile above sea level and Santa Fe higher still, so most golf in New Mexico is high-desert golf: thin air, long carries, hard sun and a ball that rolls a long way once it lands. Albuquerque holds 26 of the courses mapped in Yardage in the state, more than a quarter of the total, with Santa Fe next at 9.

Public golf here leans on the universities and the towns. The Championship Course at the University of New Mexico and its North Course are mapped, as is New Mexico State’s course in Las Cruces and New Mexico Highlands’ nine in Las Vegas (the New Mexico one). Farther out, small towns keep municipal nine-holers going: Tucumcari, Raton, Eunice and Truth or Consequences are all in the directory.

Statewide, Yardage has 96 New Mexico courses mapped, 60 of eighteen holes and 36 of nine. The nine-hole share, 37.5%, is ninth-highest in the country, and in 34 of the 47 towns listed the course in the directory is the only one. By population the state is close to the national middle: 4.52 courses per 100,000 people, 26th of 50, one for every 22,141 New Mexicans. The season depends on altitude. Las Cruces and the southern valleys play through the winter, Albuquerque plays most of it with frost delays, and the mountain courses in the north shut down when the snow comes.

Compare those numbers with the rest of the country in the Golf Course Census, or browse other states in the national directory. Visiting golfers should read our guide to playing a course for the first time; the altitude alone will change how far each club goes.
