Golf in Oklahoma runs close to year-round. Warm-season grass goes brown in winter and the course stays open on it; summer pushes tee times to early morning; spring brings the storms. Through all of it blows the wind, which the state tourism office is honest about when it describes the flatter, wind-swept courses of the west against the hilly, tree-lined ones of the northeast.

The Oklahoma directory below holds 174 mapped courses, 129 eighteen-hole and 45 nine-hole. Oklahoma City leads with 15 mapped courses and Tulsa has 12, with the suburbs of Broken Arrow and Edmond at 7 each and Guthrie at 5. Against the population the state runs a little under the national rate: 4.22 courses per 100,000 people, 31st of 50, or one course for every 23,697 Oklahomans, figures the Golf Course Census lays out for every state.

Public golf here has three unusual landlords. State park golf is part of it: the courses at Lake Murray, Arrowhead and Roman Nose are mapped. The military does too: Fort Sill’s course, Tinker Air Force Base’s and Altus Air Force Base’s are all in the catalog. And the University of Oklahoma’s Jimmie Austin course in Norman is mapped. In the small towns the municipal nine carries on, at Pauls Valley, Pawnee, Stroud and Woodward among others, and one-course towns make up 74 of the 100 Oklahoma towns below.

If a work trip lands you on a course you have never seen, our guide to playing a course for the first time is worth reading before the first tee. The national directory covers the rest of the country.
