Golf courses in Rhode Island

Rhode Island is the smallest state by area, and a golfer can drive from any of its 43 mapped courses to any other in little more than an hour. Those courses split into 31 eighteen-hole and 12 nine-hole, a 27.9% nine-hole share, and together they make up 0.29% of the national catalog, one of the smallest state shares in the Golf Course Census.

Narragansett Bay organizes the map. Warwick, on the bay’s west shore, leads the town list with 5 mapped courses, including the nine at Goddard Memorial State Park; North Kingstown, farther down the same shore, has 3, one of them the town’s municipal course. Coventry, Cranston and Harmony have 2 each, and 19 of the 29 towns in the directory have one. Salt air and bay wind reach a good number of them.

April to November is the season, with a few courses playing through mild spells in winter. ‘Country Club’ appears in 48.8% of the names, a high share, though the name says less about access than a phone call does. On population the state is 36th: 3.86 courses per 100,000 people, or one for every 25,919 Rhode Islanders.
