Two stretches of coast account for about a quarter of the courses mapped in South Carolina. The Grand Strand around Myrtle Beach and Longs has 41 mapped courses between the two towns, and the Lowcountry pair of Hilton Head Island and Bluffton has 45; together that is 86 of the 353 courses in our catalog, or 24.4%.

The state tourism office describes the weather as year-round golf weather, and on the coast that holds: spring and fall are the traveling golfer’s seasons, summer belongs to residents willing to tee off at dawn, and winter is quiet but open. Inland, the Midlands around Aiken (11 mapped courses) and the Upstate around Greenville run a few degrees cooler and a few weeks shorter.

Eighteens dominate: 303 of the mapped courses have eighteen holes and 50 have nine, a 14.2% nine-hole share that is 46th in the country, because resort golf builds in eighteens. South Carolina’s 6.34 courses per 100,000 residents put it 14th, one course for every 15,780 people, well above the national rate in the Golf Course Census. Public golf away from the resorts includes Charleston’s municipal course, Furman University’s course in Greenville and the course at Cheraw State Park, and the military plays too: Fort Jackson’s two courses and Charleston Air Force Base’s are mapped.

A lot of the golf played here is played by visitors seeing a course for the first time, so our guide to playing a new golf course was practically written for a Myrtle Beach package trip. The national directory covers the other 49 states.
