Utah plays golf in two seasons at once. In Salt Lake City and Ogden on the Wasatch Front, and up in Park City, snow shuts or slows golf from roughly November to March; in the same months St. George, in the far southwest corner, is in its prime, and the state tourism office’s line that there is golf weather somewhere in Utah all year is fair.

Salt Lake City holds 16 of the courses mapped in Yardage in Utah, and the long-standing public courses at Bonneville, Glendale, Rose Park, Forest Dale, Nibley Park and both eighteens at Mountain Dell are among them. St. George has 10, West Valley City 6, and Ogden and Park City 5 each. Wasatch Mountain and Palisade state parks have mapped courses, and Hill Air Force Base’s course is in the catalog too.

Utah’s total is 123 mapped courses: 88 eighteen-hole, 35 nine-hole, a 28.5% nine-hole share. Relative to population the figure is low: 3.48 courses per 100,000 people, 42nd of 50, one course for every 28,772 Utahns; the Golf Course Census has the comparison. One number says something about the culture: only 8.9% of the mapped courses carry ‘Country Club’ in the name, which points to a public-golf state.

If the St. George winter trip puts you on a course you have never seen, our guide to playing a new golf course is the prep. The other 49 states start from the national directory.
