Vermont has the third-most mapped courses per resident of any state: 10.08 per 100,000 people, one course for every 9,918 Vermonters, against a national rate of 4.38. It gets there with only 65 courses mapped in Yardage, because there are not many Vermonters. Forty-eight of those are eighteen-hole courses and 17 are nines, a 26.2% nine-hole share.

The Green Mountains run the length of the state, and the ski towns keep their lifts company with fairways: the tourism office notes that many of Vermont’s ski resorts double as golf resorts in summer. Stratton Mountain’s three nines and both Killington courses are mapped, along with the two at Manchester in the southern valleys. The Champlain Valley around Burlington holds the other cluster, Essex Junction with 2 and Hinesburg with 5, though Hinesburg’s count is one 27-hole club listed in each of its eighteen-hole combinations.

The season opens in May, once mud season ends, and runs through the foliage in October. Only 7 of the 54 towns listed have more than one course, and 53.8% of the mapped courses carry ‘Country Club’ in the name, a name that in Vermont often has public tee times behind it; check before you assume.

The Golf Course Census has the per-capita table for all 50 states. Leaf-season visitors playing a course for the first time should read our guide to a new course; the national directory lists the states around Vermont.
