Virginia’s golf lines up along its geography from the ocean to the mountains. Tidewater comes first, where Virginia Beach has 16 courses mapped in Yardage, more than any other city in the state, and Norfolk’s Ocean View and Portsmouth’s Bide-A-Wee municipals are in the catalog. Williamsburg’s 15 come next, resort golf built around the colonial tourist trade. Richmond’s 11 sit in the Piedmont, and then the land rises: Front Royal, with 7, at the head of the Shenandoah Valley, and Roanoke, with 11, under the Blue Ridge.

Across the state, 330 courses are mapped in Yardage, 269 of them eighteen-hole and 61 nine-hole, an 18.5% nine-hole share. Virginia has 3.72 mapped courses per 100,000 people, 39th of 50, one for every 26,909 Virginians. Military golf is part of the picture in a state with this many bases: Fort Belvoir’s two courses and Army Navy Country Club’s Fairfax club are mapped.

The season is long in Tidewater, roughly March into December, and shorter west of the Blue Ridge, where mountain frost arrives in October. The directory lists 164 Virginia towns, 108 of them with a single course. The Golf Course Census compares Virginia’s per-capita figure with the other 49 states.

Playing a Williamsburg or Shenandoah course for the first time is easier with our guide to playing a new golf course. The national directory lists the states beyond Virginia’s borders.
