Pierce County owns a links course on Puget Sound. Chambers Bay in University Place is county-owned, open to the public and mapped in Yardage, and it sets the tone for a state where public golf is the rule: Seattle’s Jackson Park, Jefferson Park and West Seattle courses are mapped, as are the municipal courses in Bellevue, Lynnwood and Bellingham.

The Cascades make two states of one. Seattle, with 12 mapped courses, Tacoma with 11 and Redmond with 9 play all year on the wet side: soft ground, damp feet, little snow to speak of. Spokane, with 11, sits on the dry side, where summers are hot, winters freeze, and the season runs roughly March to November. Burlington’s 7 are in the Skagit Valley farm country north of Seattle.

Statewide the catalog holds 285 Washington courses, 212 eighteen-hole and 73 nine-hole, a 25.6% nine-hole share that sits at the national median, 25th of 50. The state’s 3.56 courses per 100,000 people, one course for every 28,074 residents, is 41st of 50; the Golf Course Census shows the gap to the national rate of 4.38. Fort Lewis’s course is mapped too, listed in its three eighteen-hole combinations.

A Chambers Bay trip is a first-time round by definition; our guide to playing a course you have never seen covers it. Everything outside Washington is in the national directory.
