Wyoming has the fewest residents of any state, so 46 courses mapped in Yardage goes a long way: 7.81 courses per 100,000 people, eighth in the country, or one course for every 12,799 Wyomingites. The state tourism office counts almost 100 courses in all, so treat the directory below as the mapped set, not a registry.

Fifteen of the 46 are nine-holers (32.6%), the other 31 eighteens, and in 24 of the 31 towns listed there is one course and no second choice. Casper and Sheridan lead with 5 each, Casper on the North Platte at the center of the state and Sheridan at the foot of the Bighorns. Cheyenne and Rock Springs have 3 each, and Jackson’s 2 sit under the Tetons. F.E. Warren Air Force Base’s course outside Cheyenne is mapped, and so is Worland’s municipal course in the Bighorn Basin.

Elevation shapes everything. Much of Wyoming sits more than a mile above sea level, so the ball flies farther and the season runs short, roughly May to October, with the mountain courses opening last. Wind is the other constant; a 150-yard shot into it on the high plains is a different club than the number alone suggests.

Per resident Wyoming compares well with states many times its size; the Golf Course Census shows where. Anyone driving through to the parks and stopping for a round should read our guide to playing a course for the first time. For the states around it, use the national directory.
