Three Indiana universities run their own golf courses, and they are mapped in Yardage: Purdue’s two Pete Dye eighteens at the Birck Boilermaker complex in West Lafayette, which take public tee times; the two courses at Notre Dame; and Indiana University’s championship course and par-3 in Bloomington, part of why Bloomington shows 10 mapped courses.

Indianapolis leads the state with 32 mapped courses, and the city park courses are among them: Coffin, Eagle Creek, Pleasant Run, Riverside, Sarah Shank, Smock and South Grove. Fort Wayne has 19; Evansville and Kokomo 10 each, Kokomo’s total helped by the three Chippendale nines and the eighteens they make.

Yardage has 310 Indiana courses mapped, 237 eighteen-hole and 73 nine-hole, a 23.5% nine-hole share that ranks 30th, close to the national 24.7%. At 4.45 courses per 100,000 residents the state is 28th in the Golf Course Census, one course for every 22,495 people, and holds 2.07% of the catalog. Of 133 postal cities, 85 have a single mapped course.

The season runs roughly April to October across the state, a few weeks longer along the Ohio River around Evansville than up near Lake Michigan. French Lick’s two mapped courses in the southern hills are the resort end of a state whose golf is mostly flat farmland layouts an hour from home. Anyone playing away should read our guide to playing a strange course well; the national directory covers the other 49 states.
