The wind is the hazard in Kansas. The courses sit on open ground, from the Flint Hills tallgrass around Manhattan to the high plains west of Hays, and a two-club breeze is an ordinary Tuesday. Yardage has 205 Kansas courses mapped, and the split is nearly even: 109 eighteen-hole and 96 nine-hole, a 46.8% nine-hole share that ranks fifth in the country.

Of the state’s 132 postal cities, 97 have a single mapped course, and many of those are municipals: Emporia, Salina, Fort Hays in Hays, Hesston, Girard, Ellsworth and Hillsboro all show a city course in the catalog. Wichita leads with 13 mapped courses; Topeka and Overland Park have 9 each, with Olathe’s 4 rounding out the Johnson County side of the Kansas City metro. Manhattan’s 5 include Colbert Hills, a public course connected to Kansas State University’s golf course management and research foundation, and its par-3. Both Army posts have a mapped course: Custer Hill at Fort Riley and Trails West at Fort Leavenworth.

Per head, Kansas is well supplied: 6.89 courses per 100,000 residents, 12th in our Golf Course Census against a national 4.38, one mapped course for every 14,523 people. The state holds 1.37% of the catalog. The season runs from March into November, with winter play whenever the ground is not frozen, and summer afternoons are for people who like it hot.

If a work trip lands you on a course you have never seen, our guide to a first look at a new course is the one to read in the parking lot; the national directory covers every state.

Is your course mapped?

Enter the course or the town, Lawrence, Garden City or Pittsburg, and see whether your Kansas course is in our catalog.

Missing a course?

Send us the course and the town and we will look at mapping it; a nine-hole course in western Kansas counts as much as a Johnson County club.

Missing a course, or a green that looks wrong? Email support@theyardageapp.com with the course name and city and we will map it.
