Louisville has 27 courses mapped in Yardage, more than any other Kentucky city, and a good share of them are park courses with familiar names: Seneca, Shawnee, Iroquois, Cherokee, Crescent Hill, Bobby Nichols and the Quail Chase nines. Lexington shows 12, Owensboro 6, Bowling Green and Nicholasville 5 each.

Kentucky’s state parks run golf too, and the catalog reflects it: My Old Kentucky Home in Bardstown, Kentucky Dam Village, Barren River Lake, Wasioto Winds at Pine Mountain, General Butler, Rough River Dam, Jenny Wiley, John J. Audubon, General Burnside and Lincoln Homestead are all mapped as state park courses. In all, 240 Kentucky courses are mapped, 175 eighteen-hole and 65 nine-hole, a 27.1% nine-hole share that ranks 22nd. Kentucky Tourism puts the statewide total above 300, so the catalog has room to grow here.

At 5.21 courses per 100,000 residents the state is 19th in the Golf Course Census, above the national figure, one course for every 19,195 people. Kentucky holds 1.6% of the catalog, spread over 134 postal cities, 95 of them with a single course. The tourism office calls the weather year-round, and residents would put it this way: most courses stay open through winter with frost delays instead of closures, and the Bluegrass around Lexington and the river towns along the Ohio play from March straight through November.

For a round on a course you have not seen, our guide to playing a new golf course goes first; the national directory covers every state.
