Canton and Plymouth share the lead among Massachusetts towns with 6 courses mapped in Yardage each, and then Cape Cod takes over: Brewster and Mashpee show 4 apiece, and the Cape towns from Bourne out to Truro account for 40 mapped courses between them. Canton’s 6 include the two Ponkapoag courses; Brewster’s include the Captains’ Port and Starboard eighteens, 36 holes run by the town.

Municipal golf is an old habit here. Braintree Municipal, Worcester’s Green Hill, George Wright in Hyde Park, William J. Devine at Franklin Park and Cambridge’s Fresh Pond nine are all mapped. Yardage has 287 Massachusetts courses mapped, 222 eighteen-hole and 65 nine-hole, a 22.6% nine-hole share that ranks 31st.

The state is 35th in the Golf Course Census at 4.01 courses per 100,000 residents, a little under the national figure, one course for every 24,927 people, and it holds 1.91% of the catalog across 198 postal cities, 137 of them with a single course. Nearly half the course names in the state carry the words Country Club, 46.3%, which says something about how much of the golf is member golf.

The season runs roughly April to November. The Cape and the South Shore open first and stay open latest; the Berkshires, where Cranwell in Lenox is mapped, get a shorter summer.
