The Lake of the Ozarks tourism office says its courses can be played at any time of year, and nine of the courses around the lake are mapped in Yardage, from Osage National’s two combinations and The Oaks at Tan-Tar-A to Bear Creek Valley, Lake Valley in Camdenton and the Eldon course. Branson is the other resort cluster, with seven mapped courses in Branson and Hollister: Payne’s Valley, Ozarks National, Branson Creek and Thousand Hills among them.

The cities carry the rest. St. Louis shows 20 mapped courses, including Forest Park’s three nines, Dogwood, Hawthorn and Redbud, listed separately; Kansas City 12, with Swope Memorial, Hodge Park, Minor Park and Shoal Creek among the park courses; Springfield 9, including the Bill and Payne Stewart and Horton Smith municipals. Eureka has 5 and Bonne Terre 4.

Yardage has 292 Missouri courses mapped, 200 eighteen-hole and 92 nine-hole, a 31.5% nine-hole share that ranks 11th; 129 of the state’s 179 postal cities have a single course. Missouri has 4.66 courses per 100,000 residents, 23rd in the Golf Course Census and above the national figure, one course for every 21,474 people, and holds 1.95% of the catalog.

The season runs roughly March to November, and most courses stay open through the winter for anyone willing to play in a coat; the humid stretch from late June to August is when the tee sheet thins out after noon. Anyone coming for a lake week on unfamiliar courses should start with our guide to playing a new golf course; the national directory covers the other 49 states.
