The Cascade Range splits Oregon golf into two climates. West of the mountains, in the Willamette Valley and along the coast, courses stay open all year on soft green turf, and rain gear is part of the kit from November to March. East of them, around Bend and Klamath Falls, the high desert delivers dry summers, cold winters and a season that mostly runs April to October.

Portland holds 15 of the courses mapped in Yardage in Oregon, and the city’s parks bureau runs five public courses of its own; Eastmoreland, Heron Lakes, Rose City and Colwood are all mapped. Bend has 9, and Bandon, a small coastal town, has 7, including four of the courses at Bandon Dunes, Bandon Crossings and the nine at Bandon Face Rock. Eugene and Klamath Falls round out the list with 5 each.

In all, 192 Oregon courses are mapped in Yardage; 144 are eighteen-hole and 48 are nine-hole, an even 25.0% nine-hole share, 26th among the states. Oregon’s 4.49 courses per 100,000 people (27th, one for every 22,258 residents) is right around the national rate; the Golf Course Census shows where that sits against the rest of the country. One detail stands out in the names: only 13.5% of Oregon’s mapped courses call themselves a country club, which fits a state whose tourism office counts more than 200 public courses.

Travelers making the Bandon trip should read our guide to playing a course for the first time before the first tee time. The national directory lists the other 49 states.
