West Virginia’s state parks run golf courses at five parks, and all five are mapped in Yardage: Cacapon, Canaan Valley, Pipestem, Twin Falls and Stonewall Resort. In a state that is nearly all mountains, that park system is a big part of the public golf, and it puts some courses at elevations where July afternoons stay cool.

West Virginia’s directory counts 100 mapped courses, 69 eighteen-hole and 31 nine-hole. The nine-hole share of 31.0% is 12th in the country, and 70 of the 81 towns below are one-course towns, which tells you the golf follows the river valleys one town at a time. Morgantown, the university town, leads the city list with 5; Wheeling has 4, three of them at Oglebay; White Sulphur Springs has 4, three of them at The Greenbrier; and Charleston, the capital, has 3.

Counted against population, West Virginia sits 16th at 5.66 courses per 100,000 people, one for every 17,661 residents, above the national rate of 4.38 in the Golf Course Census. At elevation the season is April into October; the Ohio River lowlands around Huntington, Barboursville and Wheeling stretch it a few weeks either side. Snow can keep the high courses at Canaan Valley closed into spring.

Mountain courses reward a look at the hole lengths before the round; our guide to playing a new golf course covers what else to check. The national directory lists the five states on West Virginia’s borders and the rest.
