Tennessee’s state park system runs nine golf courses under the Tennessee Golf Trail name, and all nine are mapped in Yardage: the Bear Trace courses at Harrison Bay, Cumberland Mountain and Tims Ford, plus the park courses at Paris Landing, Montgomery Bell, Pickwick Landing, Fall Creek Falls, Warriors’ Path and Henry Horton (the Buford Ellington course). That is a lot of public golf for one landlord.

Yardage’s Tennessee list runs to 261 courses, 208 eighteen-hole and 53 nine-hole, a 20.3% nine-hole share. Memphis has 16 mapped courses and Nashville 13, with Franklin and Knoxville at 9 each and Chattanooga at 8. Per resident the state is thinner than the map suggests: 3.57 courses per 100,000 people, 40th of 50, one course for every 28,027 Tennesseans, a figure the Golf Course Census sets against every other state.

The state is three regions on a long axis. West Tennessee is Mississippi River flatland; Middle Tennessee is limestone hills around Nashville; East Tennessee climbs toward the Smokies past Knoxville and Chattanooga, and Gatlinburg’s municipal course (listed under Pigeon Forge) is mapped near the mountains. March into November is the playing calendar, with warm-season turf dormant but playable through most winters. Arnold Air Force Base’s nine in Tullahoma is mapped for the military golfers.

A Golf Trail weekend means courses you have never seen; our guide to playing a new golf course covers the routine. The national directory has the states on every side.
